Who is doing what
CSMCRI embarked on Jatropha Cultivation on wasteland in 1996 with support from UNDP/TMOP
It received support from the Deptt. of Biotechnology to raise 2 hectare cultivation in Orissa using the best varieties of the germplasm identified by Institue.
Subsequent tie up with Diamler Curysler to produce biofuels from lorded land
CSMCRI has achieved Ca.26% average yield of raw oil from whole seeds of jatropha using its specially designed oil expeller
The raw oil has been refined and a bio-diesel yield of 95-96% (w/w) with respect to refined jatropha oil has non been realized at 100 kg scale
For an assumed seed procurement price of Rs7/kg, 26% oil yield from seed and 4% FFA in oil, the biodiesel (complying with EN14214 specifications) cost based on the CSMCRI process works out to Rs 30/litre for a 2.0 TPD unit, after setting off benefits from by products
An international patent application was field last year CPCT/IN2004/000329) and the international search report has cleared all claims for novelty, uninventive steps and industrial utility
Diamler Chrysler undertook vehicle tests (using two Mercedes Benz (220CDI Vehicles without engine modification) with CSMCRIs neat biodiesel during April-May 2004.
Over 6000 Km was covered the mileage was comparable to that found with Diesel and no problem of any kind was encountered during the trip
Test have also been conducted by Bharat Earth Movers Ltd., TAFE, Andhra Pradesh State Transport Corporation, NSIC, Rajkot and no diffculty was encountered in using the biodiesel in modified mobile and stationery engines
To date 8000 litres of jatropha biodiesel has been produced in the CSMCRI pilot plant and institute would be pleased to provide biodiesel to these interested in conducting trials
CSMCRI has few proven germplasm for which data exists on field performance both of mother plants and progenies 25 hectares of plantation have already been recived
·CSMCRI is also pursuing R&D on oil cake and along with Anand Agriculture University, demonstrated its nematiadal properties
