SOUTHERN RAILWAY
Indian Railway in general and Southern Railway in particular started using Bio diesel as an alternate fuel to HSD oil, which is a renewable source of energy and environment friendly fuel. The main source of raw material is used cooking oil from star hotels, non-edible oils like karanjia and Jatropha Curcas
Bio diesel is prepared at Loco Workshop of Southern Railway, Chennai. At present we have capacity to prepare about one tonne of Bio diesel per day and also installed an oil expeller to process 100 kgs of oil seeds per hour. The whole plant was designed by Loco Workshop and manufactured locally.
With the help of the bio diesel being produced we are now running 20 road vehicles,3 diesel shuttle train services, one Broad Gauge passenger train and one Metre Gauge passenger train services in Southern Railway territories. The oil mix proportions is 100%,20%,5% bio diesel, the remaining being normal diesel. Southern Railway has also planted in large scale Jatropha Curcas plants in vacant lands and track sidings.
